The Huggies® Nappies and Envirocomp Solution is Now Open!

The HUGGIES® Nappies and the Envirocomp Solution composting plant was officially opened in Canterbury on the 7th of August 2009.  The opening boasts all the hallmark features of Kiwi ingenuity.  This is not just a 1st for Canterbury but a 1st for New Zealand and we believe the world.   It says a lot for the Canterbury region that this is the first place to commercialise this innovative composting solution for nappies. Check out these photos of the facility and Karen Upston and her family celebrating the realisation of a dream. A dream that Huggies® nappies is so very proud to be part of.

Green Ribbon Award 2008

Turning nappies into compost wins prestigious Green Ribbon Award for the Huggies Envirocomp™ Solution

The Hurunui District Council is delighted that their nomination of Karen and Karl Upston’s ingenious commercial nappy composting operation has resulted in the couple bringing home top honours - receiving the supreme Green Ribbon Award for Making a Difference to Household Sustainability. The award was presented to the couple by Prime Minister Helen Clark at the Ministry for the Environment’s 2008 Awards on Tuesday night.

Deputy Mayor, Michael Malthus, said that many individuals and organizations including Canterbury pre schools and residential care homes had supported the Council in nominating Huggies Envirocomp™ Solution for the Award.

“This is a cutting edge venture and this award is further recognition of what is already a remarkable achievement,” he said, “As a Council and as a District we are honoured and privileged to be involved in this exciting new frontier.”

Karen Upston says that she hopes that winning the Green Ribbon Award will encourage other councils and communities to consider the Envirocomp™ Solution:

“With the support of Huggies® and Hurunui District Council we will have the first commercial nappy composting facility operating in New Zealand by the end of 2008. We encourage councils subsidizing cloth nappies to look at following Hurunui’s leadership and support something parents do want which is a credible and efficient alternative solution to landfill.”
